The seaweed is always greener
The seaweed is always greener
Seaweeds are not plants - they are a type of algae. They have no roots, leaves or stems to transport water or nutrients. Instead each cell derives what it needs directly from the seawater around it. The only similarity between seaweed and land plants is that both rely on sunlight to create energy through photosynthesis.
DID YOU KNOW
Most of the world’s oxygen, about 70%, comes from seaweeds and algae. And Seaweed is one of the biggest carbon sequesters on our planet. Scientists believe Seaweed can be a big part of the climate change solution.
Seaweed can come in many shapes and sizes. There are the microscopic micro seaweeds and the large macro seaweeds. The smaller ones are those you can see that are washed up on shore at the beach, while the bigger ones are those you can find covering large rocks or carried to shore by large waves.
Seaweed doesn’t refer to a single plant—rather, it is a common name for thousands of marine plants and algae. Although it lacks a formal term, many group seaweed into three categories: red, green, and brown algae.
To date, scientists have discovered over 12,000 species of seaweed, many of which have valuable uses. As you now know, it’s an ingredient found in many of the best anti aging products today and widely used for cosmetic purposes.
Seaweed is also considered a superfood and can provide you with many health benefits. From lowering your risk of breast cancer to fighting off deadly diseases, seaweed is essentially the kale of the sea.

Seaweed is not only incredibly useful as an edible in its own right. It is also very useful as a fertilizer. You can use it in a range of different ways to grow more food in your garden.
1. Seaweed has 60 trace minerals and ready-to-use nutrients including nitrogen, potassium, phosphate, and magnesium. It also contains hormones to encourage plant growth. Unlike other garden amendments, such as manure, seaweed does not need to decompose before being a benefit to your garden.
2. Pest control. Slugs especially hate seaweed because of its sharp edges and salt. Birds and other garden pests dislike it for the same reasons.
3. Improved aeration. Seaweed helps aerate the soil just like peat moss does, but it has the added benefit of delivering nutrients and minerals.
4. Prevents fungus and disease. Seaweed helps you to grow strong, healthy plants, and healthy plants resist fungus and disease.
5. Seaweed goes a long way to keep the soil in your garden moist. It reduces the need to water. Seaweed doesn’t need to decompose before application to benefit your garden. This is important because it reduces the number of times you need to weed your garden. The soil beneath the mulch remains moist, thereby making it easy to root out any weeds that sprout above the mulch. Seaweed also doesn’t have seeds that could turn into plants as other mulches like bark mulch do.
